If you're running with the goal of losing weight you should take some extra things into account.

First, be careful to avoid injury.  Damaging your joints or muscles by running too much too fast will set you back in your progress.  One bad injury could keep you from running for weeks and may end your chances of finishing the half marathon you're training for.

Second, find a plan that works for you.  A training plan should lead you from where you are now to finishing the half marathon.  A running plan will consist of the actual runs that you will do including details such as how far, how fast, and if you should do hills, sprints, or target a specific heart rate.

Third, get some help with the motivation you'll need.  The running that you'll need to do constitutes a significant change in your life.  Change is hard.  Real change will only come by finding support in the form of friends and community that push you to make the change.  The hope and motivation you get from others will force you to stick with it.

Lastly,  learn to love running.  This may require a change in perspective.  Runners really enjoy getting out on the trails to run.  The adrenaline that you get from a good run. Being outside and active is fun.  Avoid seeing running as just a means to an end.  Tell yourself and tell others that you love to run.  While running don't think of the pain think happy thoughts and smile or laugh as you go.  These psychological tricks will help to shift your perceptions.
